Coos Bay Nursing Home

Most people believe that nursing homes are the only options available as you prepare to care for an aging parent.  However, in the past 30 years, more appropriate care options have become available to help serve seniors that do not require dedicated skilled nursing. As a matter of fact, very few residents require dedicated nursing care and can benefit from an independent, assisted or memory care setting.

Spectrum Retirement offers independent, assisted and memory care living, but does not have a nursing home component. Indeed, for decades, only about 5 percent of the country’s older adults have ever resided in a nursing home (called a skilled nursing facility for its more advanced care). But in between one’s own home and a nursing home you’ll find a variety of housing options, called the continuum of care.

  • Independent living – For older adults who can take care of themselves, and who seek housing with little maintenance. It often has activities and amenities designed for older adults’ convenience and social needs.
  • Assisted living – For older adults who need help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing, eating or transferring, or instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), such as using transportation, managing finances and taking medications. This housing has staff nearby who can offer any needed assistance.
  • Skilled nursing facility -- This housing has 24-hour professional nursing staff for older adults who can't be cared for at home and who don’t need a hospital. Increasingly, SNFs strive for “culture change,” a less institutional and more homelike approach to care.

The continuum may also offer:

  • Memory care – For older adults who find it unsafe to live alone because of memory loss. Designed for security and comfort, it is staffed round-the-clock with professionals trained in caring for and maximizing the abilities of people who live with dementia.
  • Short-term housing – a place for one’s older adult relative to stay while the caregiver is out of town or otherwise not available.
  • Rehabilitation -- most housing types can offer care for older adults recovering from surgery, falls or other health issues before returning home.

Real People. Real Stories.
"There is a variety of social activities. Participate and you will have fun. Be positive, smile, and be friendly and you will like being here. I consider the staff is my family and residents are friends. Most of the residents have apartments; I consider mine a Bachelor Pad, with Jazz playing in the background."
